Design the First D of ADDIE

Updated: Feb 2, 2021

The design phase, where the objectives are dealt with, assessment instruments are established, exercises and content are created, and the lesson's actual planning is fleshed out. In this phase you start planning the strategy of how the materials will be presented and how it will ultimately appear to an end-user comprise the lion's share of this portion within the model.

The focus of this step in the ADDIE model is how you want users to see your materials and interact with them.

Michael Treser had a wonderful concise point that fully describes the design phase, “The goal of this stage is to create the structure of the course. It can take the form of something as simple as a storyboard accompanied by some sketches, or as elaborate as a detailed plan, full of descriptions and schematics. Whatever form it takes, the layout of a course usually includes the descriptions of the main topics the course will cover and goals it sets out to achieve, as well as short descriptions of pages’ contents and a general idea of what the navigation and the user interface will look like.”

So that is it really, phase two complete, when you reach the design phase your focus is on structure and the courses layout. What do you want to achieve with your course, how do you want it to look, how should it flow for the end user? These three questions are answered before you find yourself progressing any further.
